Before beginning work on your website, take time to consider and research a potential domain name.

A carefully chosen domain name can help drive traffic to your website and easily become one of the most important assets of your business. And because some Search Engines use the domain name as a variable for ranking websites, it is important to choose carefully.

Helpful Hints:  How to Choose a Domain Name

Whether your strategy is to use your business name, business slogan, or service-related text as your domain name, consider the following helpful hints.

  • Know your target market. Choose a name that visitors are most likely to use when trying to find your site through a search engine.
  • Your domain name should help brand your business. Make sure that it will work with your other marketing efforts.
  • Your domain name should be as short as possible, easy to remember, and easy to spell. Would the average person be able to accurately spell the name after hearing it?
  • Avoid hyphens, dashes and underscores in your domain name if possible. These are harder to remember, and may require you to spell it out every time you mention it.
  • Avoid using numbers within your domain name. This may cause confusion ("1" vs "one") and require you to spell it out every time you mention it.
  • Although there are many new domain extensions available, a ".com" extension is still the best choice. Consider that when typing a web address, most Internet users will automatically type in a ".com" extension.
  • Also consider buying your domain name with different extensions such as ".net" or ".org". In the highly competitive business world, this will prevent someone from purchasing the same name but with a different extension.
